Reaction to Proposition 8

After listening to the video on Yes to prop 8 I found myself shaking my head in disbelief. First, in the video they discuss how gay couples in California already have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples. They then said, “So why is it a big deal to change the definition of marriage if they already have the same rights.” They want to change the definition of marriage so that it can only be between a man and a women and they are trying to show that this would not affect the rights of same sex couples. In my opinion I can take this the other way as well. If gay couples already have the same rights as heterosexual couples why shouldn’t they be able to get married?
The other thing that upset me was that they brought up the fact that they don’t know what their children would be learning in school if same sex marriage was allowed. Whether one lives in a state where same sex marriage is allowed or banned, their children should be learning about multicultural issues. Children have the right to see themselves in books. Even if same sex marriage is banned in the state, if there is only one student in your classroom whose parents are gay, the issue of same sex parents should be discussed. The fact that this is what they had to include in their discussion of why people should vote yes on proposition 8 really bothered me.
